The primary objective of a filter is to mitigate the negative impact of smoking on consumers’ health by reducing exposure to toxicants. There are also other challenges that need to be solved with a filter like the ability to withstand high temperatures without substantial degradation or risk to the user. Cellulose acetate, which is a form of plastic, has to date remained the only viable filter material as its intrinsic characteristics have not been matched.
