Globally, manufacturers are working on making improvements to filter technology and reducing the impact on the environment and are there are some encouraging developments taking place in this space. Whilst global research and development efforts are ongoing, the wide scale implementation of a biodegradable butts is currently not feasible in the short to medium term.  It should also be recognised that biodegradability is a complex process, and there are additional complexities involved with the sustainable decomposition of cigarette butts.   Essentially, we don’t yet have the technological key to unlocking the materials and/or treatment required to create a useable filter that degrades safely and quickly in the natural environment.
